California’s Sea Otter Population Declines Slightly

A U.S. Geological Survey reveals that California’s sea otter population has dropped 0.5 percent from last year, the first drop since the late 1990s. Pup counts, however, have continued to increase. Sea otters will not be considered for removal from the Endangered Species List until the 3-year running averages exceed 3,090 for three continuous years. See the USGS report (with a nifty graph) here.
